What is a Hydrosol?
The alchemy and art of distilling for hydrosols helps preserve as much of the plant’s volatile compounds possible. Hydrolate is known to be ‘living’ plant medicine. The act of disitllation is the act of volatizing plant material by applying heat and water. We can think of earths hydrologic cycle and compare the basics of evaporation, transpiration and condensation that create our water. When we use a copper alembic pot (representing earth) where the plant material blends with water as it heats the water vapors (evaporation and transpiration) rise up the hat (sky). Next they are cooled in the condensor where they once again become liquid (like rain) and drip out as the hydrolate. This beautiful alchemy has been created since approximately 1200 BCE and used many ways from skin and hair care to gentle aromatherapy especially for those sensitive to more intense essential oils.
